Linton Walkers

Linton Walkers on the beach at Seasalter, July 2017

Linton has an active walking group that meets every week, almost throughout the year:

On each Thursday morning at 11am there is a weekly walk, typically from a pub or village within five miles of Linton for between 3 and 4 miles. In addition, we have a full programme of evening walks, each Tuesday evening. Altogether there were 79 of these weekly walks in 2017! More details are here. All are welcome – we have walkers coming from all over mid Kent.

On the first Sunday of every month throughout the year, we run a somewhat longer monthly walk of between 6-8 miles or so which starts at 11.00 am and involves a half way stop at a suitable pub or village. for these we usually go a little further afield but they will typically be within a 30 minute drive of Linton. More details are here.

In addition to the weekly and monthly walks, we also organise the annual Linton Parish Boundary Walk. This takes place on Rogation Sunday, which in 2018 is on 6th May. Please support this walk – it is a long-standing Linton tradition, which we are working hard to keep going. More details are here.

We also have a Summer Outing.. once a year we head off to somewhere exotic!

In recent years we have been to Beachy Head… the Ashdown Forest… Dover & St Margaret’s Bay…  the beautiful cliffs above Folkestone and the Battle of Britain Memorial….  atmospheric Dungeness…  the Seven Sisters country park, and in 2017 Seasalter and Whitstable.

This year, 2018, we will be heading back to the seaside! Final location to be advised. If you send Jerry Whitmarsh an email he will add you to the emailing list so you always get up-to-date news and walk information

Finally, we have an annual Walkers dinner in a local restaurant or pub.. A record 51 people attended the (excellent!) November 2017 dinner in the Plough at Langley.

All of our walks involve a donation of £1 per head, in aid of the Friends of Linton Church and similar Linton based worthy causes. In 2017 we raised £1,658 – all at £1 per walk – and were able to donate money to various charities including the Friends of Linton Church, to the Church itself, to Buttercups Goat Sanctuary, to the Rapid Relief Team and to the Linton Defibrillator project, amongst other beneficiaries

Reggie, the goat the Linton Walkers are Guardians of. He has a brother, Ronnie…

The really wonderful thing about these walks is how many good things they do, all at once:

– they get us out of doors into the fresh air and contribute to a healthy lifestyle

– they show us how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world. The views across the Weald from Linton are fabulous!

– they show us the ins and outs of our local footpaths, fields and beauty spots – places you never knew were there, perhaps only a mile from your own home..

– there is a strong social element to the walks. Numbers vary from week to week, but we are a friendly group and there is always someone to talk to, or not as you choose.. often we end up in a pub, but at least we will have earned our drink!

Why not give it a try? Contact Jerry, or Peter, or just turn up to any walk.

All the walks are organised and led by Jerry Whitmarsh and Peter McGillivray. Click on their name, to contact them by email. They are happy to provide more details or answer questions on request.
